Prince Edward Island Mussels are the same species as the Whitewater Mussel™ and that is where the similarities end.  These rope cultured mussels are grown in mesh stockings that are suspended from long lines (ropes) in the water. These mussels never touch the ocean bottom and the water column in which they are suspended provides ideal conditions for rapid growth and plump meats.  This is due to larger quantities of food in the water column as opposed to the ocean bottom. These rope cultured mussels are free of grit and, though not as sweet tasting as a Whitewater Mussel™, provide a nice alternative mussel for the market.
